Competa Overview
Competa is situated in the heart of the Axarquia region, approximately 40km from Malaga airport. At 700 metres above sea level, Competa offers superb views of the surrounding mountains, countryside and the Mediterranean. Competa is very well known for its locally produced wines of which there are two types, sweet and dry. The sweeter, which is more common and slightly cheaper, tends to be more popular with locals rather than foreign residents or tourists.
Competa is particularly popular amongst Scandinavians. It is also a popular spot for pensioners and as a result, there are many retirement homes to be found here. Previously emigration figures were high in Competa with only a small percentage of young people choosing to remain in the town. The constant flow of tourists has had a positive effect on the local economy, averting this trend and providing more varied work options.
The growth in Competa´s local economy has also underpinned a surge in the number of local bars and restaurants here. In the heart of Competa is the Plaza de Almijara, which is dominated by a magnificent church from the sixteenth century. From this point on, Competa is a labyrinth of winding streets, characteristic of many Andalusian towns with a Moorish influence.
