Torrox Costa Overview
Torrox is located 47km east of Malaga in between Torre del Mar and Nerja. Torrox centre is approximately 4km inland but the town is an established resort and is particularly popular with Germans. The mountains situated close to Torrox are enveloped in vineyards and olive trees although more recently, large numbers of glasshouses have been constructed.
Similar to most Andalusian towns, Torrox has Neolithic, Roman and Moorish origins. Torrox was an important Roman factory city and extensive ruins have been excavated and restored including baths, a luxury villa and a necropolis. The walls of Torrox and its clock tower are of Moorish origin. Torrox boasts 9km of beach and many of these have been awarded the Blue Flag.
Torrox is actually divided into two parts, the upper village nestling in the mountains with its Moorish influence and the lower village, nearer the sea reflecting its Roman origin. More recent sites of historical interest include the sixteenth century convent and the imposing eighteenth century parish church.
